Bever Park

Bever Park in Cedar Rapids, IA, was established in 1893, after the death of a prominent Cedar Rapids businessman Sampson Bever, whose family owned the land. It started as a Zoo and was one of the largest zoos in the city of Cedar Rapids. Over time, it was realised that animals needed better living conditions, so a decision was made to create the zoo into a park without the captive wildlife. Those who believe in conservation and a better environment for animals will appreciate Bever Park for its commitment to the cause. There are unique before and after displays showcasing the massive change the zoo went through physically and principally.

Bever Park is one of the oldest parks in Cedar Rapids. It has a ton of history that it displays throughout the park. There are also smaller structures dating back to its inception, such as a stone planter dedicated in 1909 and a small stone bridge. However, the stone bridge might be removed because Cedar Rapids does not have enough budget to fund its repairs. Bever Park has also transformed the older zoo dens into gardens; for example, the former bear den is now a butterfly garden. The park proudly displays the remnants of its past to show how far they have come.

Bever Park is also home to a petting zoo. The Old Macdonald’s Farm is a free petting farm that is open to the public for free. It features several farm animals, like goats, chickens, cattle, rabbits, ducks, lambs, pigs, tortoises, and guinea pigs. It is an excellent way for children to spend their time learning about animals. Although the petting farm is free of charge, visitors are encouraged to make small donations if they wish to for the upkeep of the animals and the farm in general.

Bever Park is one of the prime locations during summer. Residents have been coming to the park to swim in the public pool for years. There are many summer memories associated with this gem of a park. There are also several picnic locations and pavilions that can be rented. You can even rent the pool for pool parties! To do so, you will have to contact the Cedar Rapids Park and Recreation department two weeks in advance. Food is allowed, and the Lifeguards are included in the rental fee. The Bever Park pool can accommodate up to 600 people.
